Time is money when filming on location and logistics are complex enough, without having additional disruption in the event of on-set illness or injury.

The Canopy medical cover team are used to ensuring the show can go on, with our long experience of supporting different event types, together with our frontline NHS experience, which allows us to operate calmly in unexpected and difficult situations. Here’s one of those stories from our team’s experience:

Tales from the set

“The UK production I was covering had a Steadicam operator flown in from Spain for 4 days of specific filming. On arrival the chap came to see me as they’d recently had a shoulder operation to remove a Lipoma and were worried about whether they’d rushed back to work too soon. It didn’t feel quite right, and a shoulder problem is the last thing someone needs with Steadicam work!

Unfortunately he’d developed Seroma (fluid under the skin) that needed to be drained, not something easily done on-site, but I was able to liaise with the patient’s own doctor in Spain and get them in to see a UK GP, who was able to drain the Seroma and prescribe medications to reduce the risk of the issue returning, all within 48 hours of initial presentation.

The appointment was done outside of the working day, meaning this had zero effect on the production, this also meant the crew member was able to work without any interruption to their income.”

Commercial considerations

Getting the right outcomes takes good planning and flexibility, which we know our clients love about us. We aren’t just good medics, you can take that as minimum requirement. We’re also good planners, who understand commercial as well as medical considerations.

We know the requirements for every shooting day are different and it doesn’t help you to have an inflexible supplier who has a rigid process and won’t adapt to save you money or make things easier. We can. We work with you before, during and after every day we need to attend, to both prepare for it, and review for the future.

As an example, the medical cover team does not always need to bring ambulances or other vehicles to location, so you shouldn’t need to pay for them. We can source them for high-risk situations, or determine whether they’re an unnecessary overhead.
